What

The basement of Aiginis 9 is a creative, community-run space, centring on technology, sound and making. It is part of a multipurpose building run and maintained by Khora, a self-organised collective of volunteers from various countries and cultural backgrounds that has operated in Athens since 2016 in solidarity with displaced people.

The lab is a self-organised, DIY/DIWO space without distinctions between volunteer and user, or between student and teacher. We organise and run workshops where everybody can share and learn.

Our starting interests are diverse and include: sound recording and sound art, writing, research, technology education, upcycling, open source culture, textiles, robots, musical instruments, computers and electronics. We will create and operate machines for the community.

Our ongoing workshop plans:

  • Physical computing and 3D printing - joining the maker movement. We will repair, re-use and augment Khora’s old acoustic instruments for a New Broken Orchestra.
  • Location sound recording – equipping people with the skills to record the city. Through this we will create a Khora sound archive, organise a sound exhibition for the local community, and share resources for producing podcasts and radio.
  • Open sound lab - creative gatherings for skill sharing and discussions around music and sound.
  • DIY midi controller
  • Sound Synthesis
